Individual and Group Factors Affecting Internet Use Behaviors of Youth in Khon Kaen Municipality

  The objectives of this research are 1) to study individual and group factors affecting youth's internet use behaviors and 2) to examine the relationship of individual and group factors to youth's internet use behaviors. 379 samples attending the equivalent of grades 7-12 at 5 large schools located in Khon Kaen municipality were selected through Purposive Sampling and Simple Random Sampling. Questionnaire was used as a research tool for gathering data. Content validity of questionnaire was examined by 3 content experts. Cronbach's alpha was also applied in a pre-test stage to measure the reliability of the research tool. The alpha coefficient for all items was 0.83. The results show that, according to the factor of friend, classmates most influentially persuade youth to use the internet (97.36%) and mainly provide youth with advice on new programs (19.20%). Regarding family factor, it is found that youth mainly discloses that their families establish the regulations for home internet access (55.15%) and also accepts that their family's members advise them about types of websites to use for information search (16.80%). With reference to educational institution factor, it is found that most of youth's schools establish the regulations for their internet access (79.68%) and equip them with types of websites used for searching information (16.80%). In term of the relationship of individual and group factors to youth's internet use behaviors, it is found that friends' persuasion to use the internet and family's regulation on time spending on the internet are positively related to youth's time spending on the internet at the level of statistical significance of 0.05. Also, educational institution's regulation on objectives of internet use is positively related to youth's types of internet services regarding information search at the level of statistical significance of 0.05.
