Abstract :

The objective of this study was twofold: 1) to investigate the historical evolution of Pak Nam Chi community and 2) to explore the factors contributing to change, adaptation, and existence of Pak Nam Chi community from 1930 to 2006 A.D. (2504–2549 B.E.) through a qualitative research. The research findings were as follows: 1) The topography of Pak Nam Chi community was flat having evolved more than 200 years. During 1930-1960 A.D. the people’s way of life was in a traditional and simple style, relying on bountiful resources such as forest, land, and water. Self-reliant economy, rice farming, and fishing along natural water ways were practiced by the whole community. Later, there was mass transportation when the railway from Bangkok to Ubon Ratchathani province was constructed in the year 1930 A.D. (2473 B.E.). Convenience in travelling had changed people’s lifestyle in that wider trading and exchanging goods were popular among people outside the community. However, the people did not seem to gain many advantages from the modern transportation means as expected due to yearly floods causing insufficiency in rice plantation to supply the entire community as well as the commercial purpose. Considering social dimensions, there was a close relationship among kinships and general people. Traditional practice known as ‘Kan Oaw Rang’ (people voluntarily gather to help do a particular labor-needing job) was commonly practiced in those days. Regarding cultural aspect, ‘Heed Sib-Song’ or the 12-lunar-month tradition was practiced by all people in the community. 2) In the year 1961 A.D. (2504 B.E.) the National Socio-Economic Development Plan was firstly implemented for the country development. This had brought a great change to the community of Pak Nam Chi. Several factors were found to be mostly influential in the people’s way of life. They were external and internal. The external factors included government’s policies, modern transportation and technologies, and price of goods. The internal factors involved an increase of community population, education, community leaders, migration of people to urbanized cities, and lack of participation of the community’s members when there were traditional and cultural activities or events. In accord with the change, the evidence showed the people’s adaptation of their lifestyle as seen in growing commercial crops, production processes, changes in earthenware designs, and raising the livestock, fish raising in the fish pen, and the like. The changes in merit making and cultural practice were also found in that the job-related migrants went back to the community from urbanized cities when particular cultural activities were held in the community. Substantial factors that contributed to the existence of such practices were cultural and traditional beliefs, a kinship-like support among people in the community, kinship relations, belief transfer from generation to generation, support from various external organizations and internal community bodies, and having strong community leaders.
